Mission: To reforest the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.
Trees For Haiti, a Food For The Poor venture, aims to make Haiti more green and self-sufficient by planting fruit trees across the Caribbean nation. Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, has experienced a major ecological disaster due to deforestation. The country frequently experiences life-threatening floods and mud slides because of rampant soil erosion due to the lack of trees.
Twenty years ago, scientists calculated that at the rate of deforestation, the country’s tree cover would be completely depleted by 2008. In 2007, Food For The Poor, one of the leading international relief and development organisations in the Caribbean, began an extensive tree-planting program. Over 100,000 fruit trees have been planted in Haiti, providing a source of nutritious food for the residents, and restoring the natural environmental balance. In the town of Fosse Capois, 15 miles from Cap-Haitien, the planting began on Green Friday, February 1, 2008.
